Cash register w/ Inventory capabilities?
I’m opening a new small business soon and am looking at cash registers, etc. Due to the cost, I can’t afford a full POS system like HP’s rp5700 right now, so that’s off the table.
Does anyone know of a cash register that can also keep track of inventory levels? I’m thinking of a cash register (with barcode scanner) that either has inventory software built in, or has one available as an option.
I’m envisioning something simple, like inputting the inventory level for each sku by scanning the barcode then manually typing the quantity. Then having the cash register change the inventory level each time a barcode is scanned. I figure the inventory info would be uploaded from the cash register to a PC for printout, etc instead of the cash register actually printing reports.
Does anyone know if something like that exists?

To keep track of inventory levels requires either a POS system or a cash register with software interface.
Many people think they want to keep track of inventory but do not understand the full ramifications of it. Depending on your situation you may want to just think about a cash register with scanning that would give you a report of the number of each item sold.
To fully track inventory levels, requires someone to enter in the quantity of each item received from your vendors, normally you would also enter in the cost per item to have the system compute the profit margin and your cost of inventory at both the cost and retail price levels.
When keeping track of inventory levels, I always recommend to our customers to go with a PC based POS system. By the time you purchase a cash register and then the software interface you are close to the price of the system. A PC based system has many more advantages and greater reporting capabilities than a cash register.
